I was watching television last night and there was a segment on Hardball about the popularity of Christian music today. I really had no idea that there were so many bibles sold and so many different versions on the market.

Well, some things don’t ever seem to change and demand for Harry Potter’s latest book don’t seem to be any different. This latest installment went on pre-sale by Amazon 3 months before it was scheduled to be released. When I was just out of college I was looking for a new way to workout and stay motivated. A few blocks away was a Kung-Fu studio that a couple of friends of mine and I joined. What I really liked about our master was that he taught many different styles of martial arts including Shaolin, grappling techniques like those used in Jiu Jitsu, kickboxing and Tae-Kwan-Do.

By far my favorite were the grappling lessons. It has been nearly 8 years since I have attended any classes, but I would like to learn about some new techniques. I just found a couple of great books on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focusing on the teachings and style of legend, Royler Gracie. For those of you not familiar with Gracie, he is one of the all-time great wrestling and Jiu Jitsu greats…maybe the greatest. If you were to see him, you would not think he is anyone who could whoop some butt. But, let me tell you, the lean, fit-looking Gracie has beaten just about everyone that has stepped up to the plate. The book by Royler Gracie is all about submission grappling and covers moves and techniques like:

• his own right wrist
• standing guard pass
• wraps his right arm
• calf lock
• butterfly guard
• hip escape
• slides his hips
• elbow escape
• technical fighter
• neck crank
• drops his hips
• foot lock
• forearm choke
• closed guard
• hook sweep

Together, these techniques have carried Royler to 3 consecutive AADC titles. This is clearly the place to start if you are looking to learn more about submission grappling, wrestling or self-defense.

I never thought that I would ever need or want a hamburger press. But, they are actually great for a couple of things. One, they are great to help you make evenly pressed burgers, quickly. Money Magazine is a good magazine for people looking to stay on top of the latest economic news that affects the vast majority of Americans, but without all of the fancy lingo. One of the best things Money Magazine does is their real estate edition. Once a year Money ranks the top performing real estate markets in the country, gives a three year history, and forecasts what they believe is likely to happen in these markets. While they do not have a crystal ball, it is a great read and definitely will open your eyes to what is going on around you and in the country as a whole. There are also a number of great articles about real estate investing, news and where you might want to put your money.

Money Magazine is also very good at keeping you informed about the latest news in educational financial aid, car loans and insurance and basically anything financial that you actually think about. They don’t get into why the Chinese Yuan has not be re-valued in 10 years, as most of the readers don’t care or understand what that has to do with them. The focus is on what affects most “average” Americans.

I think when I was a little guy rummaging around through my parents’ stuff, I came across my dad’s Bulova watch. It was a gift from someone or the company he worked for at the time I think.
